Saturday’s Belmont Stakes reminded us again why Bob (Railbird) Roberts ranks among the the greatest thoroughbred horse racing handicappers of our era. In this space Saturday Bob nailed the first and second place finishers in the Belmont — Union Rags and Paynter. Of course, they were the betting favorites, but they came through. The exacta returned $31.40, better than hiding two bucks under your mattress or in your neighborhood bank at half a per cent interest.
Bob’s pick for third, Dullahan, was never a factor and finished seventh, 11 lengths behind the winner.
But from the moment Friday morning when I’ll Have Another was scratched, this Belmont was a two-horse race.
The Railbird has had a good spring here at Coughlinforever. I’m grateful he has shared his expertise with us. Next, it’s off to Saratoga.
