This is Tuesday night and, as promised, the Railbird Bob Roberts, legendary handicapper of horse flesh for The Plain Dealer in happier days, shares with us his steeds to watch in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
From now, this is the Railbird talking.
Here are the six horses I’m looking at for Saturday’s Derby. The starting lineup will be finalized tomorrow night . . .
UNION RAGS — Was flying at end of Florida Derby after being boxed in on backstretch. Trainer is Michael Matz, who developed 2006 winner Barbaro. Union Rags had huge workout at Churchill Downs last weekend.
TAKE CHARGE INDY — He won Florida Derby and appears to be getting better with each race. Calvin Borel, who has own three Derbies, is his rider. Nobody knows Churchill Downs better than Calvin.
I’LL HAVE ANOTHER — Santa Anita Derby winner is very brave when challenged. He could remain on a roll.
BODEMEISTER — Trained by Bob Baffert and named after Baffert’s son Bode, who is named after Olympic skier Bode Miller. Bodemeister was a romping winner of the Arkansas Derby.
WENT THE DAY WELL — Won the Spiral Stakes at Turfway. Is in the capable hands of trainer Graham Motion, a very sharp Englishman who won last year’s Derby with Animal Kingdom.
DULLAHAN — Won the Blue Grass Stakes and appears to be peaking at the right time.
Check back Friday when the Railbird will share his betting recommendations.
