Sorry. I forgot to alert you earlier about the movie, “Angels in the Outfield,” on TCM at 5:30 p.m. today, Wednesday. If you are on our new postings alert, you have time to run home and turn on your TV.
This is the original 1951 version with Paul Douglas, Janet Leigh and Donna Corcoran, which is vastly superior to that superficial remake of a few years ago about the California Angels. It actually gets three stars in the Plain Dealer TV guide and is worth every last one of them. I love Paul Douglas in black and white as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates at old Forbes Field. Janet Leigh is the newspaper feature writer assigned to tackle the women’s angle on the crusty old manager who swears like a sonuvabitch. Donna Corcoran is the engaging orphan who is the only one who sees the angels.
You’ll see many nice shots of Forbes Field, which was closed after the 1969 season. It also has brief appearances by Joe DiMaggio and Ty Cobb.
It’s how we loved our baseball movies back then. If you miss it this time, put it on your bucket list.
Stay tuned. I’m gonna unload on Shakespeare next time.
